The Question Every Homeowner Faces

Your gutters are leaking, sagging, or just looking tired, and you are standing in the yard wondering: fix them or replace them? It is the most common question we hear, and the answer is refreshingly logical once you know what to look at. This is the exact framework we use on our free estimates — no secrets, no sales playbook.

Repair When the Problem Is Local

Repair is the smart money when the damage is confined to specific spots and the rest of the system is sound. One or two leaking seams on otherwise solid gutters: reseal them. A sagging section where hangers loosened: re-pitch and re-hang with better hangers. A crushed downspout from a ladder or a mower: replace the section. An end cap that popped: replace the two-dollar part, not the two-thousand-dollar system.

The key test: if you fixed the specific problems, would you have a gutter system you would trust for five more years? If yes, repair. A good repair on sound gutters buys years of service for a fraction of replacement cost — and we would rather earn your trust with an honest repair than your money with an unnecessary replacement.

Replace When the Problems Are Systemic

Replacement is the answer when the problems are everywhere, not somewhere. Rust-through in multiple spots — especially on steel gutters — means the material is failing, and patching one hole just moves the leak to the next thin spot. Chronic leaking at every seam on old sectional gutters means the whole system has shifted or the sealant has aged out everywhere at once. Gutters that will not hold pitch no matter how often they are re-hung are usually bent, twisted, or hung on rotted fascia — the geometry is gone.

The money test: add up what you have spent (or been quoted) on repairs in the last few years, and project the next few. If you are averaging a repair visit a year, you are on a subscription plan for failing gutters — and a new seamless system is cheaper than three more years of patches.

The Fascia Factor

Here is the variable most homeowners miss: the fascia board behind the gutter. If the fascia is rotted, neither repair nor replacement of the gutter alone will hold — new hangers in mushy wood pull right back out. We check the fascia on every assessment. Sometimes the real quote is "fascia repair plus gutter re-hang," which is cheaper than full replacement and lasts just as long. Sometimes the fascia is fine and the gutters are shot. The point is: the answer depends on the whole assembly, not just the metal trough.

The Age and Material Cheat Sheet

Aluminum gutters under 20 years old with local problems: almost always repair. Aluminum over 25-30 years with widespread issues: replacement is usually smarter. Steel gutters with any rust-through: lean replacement — steel fails from the inside and patches do not hold. Sectional gutters with leaks at most seams: replacement with seamless pays for itself in ended maintenance. Copper gutters: almost always repair — the material outlasts everything and is worth saving.

What About Guards in the Decision?

If you are replacing gutters, add the guards now — the system is clean, straight, and perfectly pitched, which is the ideal guard foundation, and you save a second round of labor. If you are repairing gutters, guards still make sense on the repaired system as long as the gutters are sound enough to guard — we will tell you honestly whether yours qualify. Do not put premium guards on gutters you will replace in two years; that is the one combination that wastes money.

How We Give You the Answer

Our free visit ends with a straight recommendation: repair, replace, or "you are fine, see you at cleaning time" — with photos showing you why. We quote both options when it is genuinely close, so you can see the math. And if the honest answer is that you do not need us at all right now, we will say that too. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my gutters are steel or aluminum?

A magnet sticks to steel, not aluminum. Or just ask us during the free visit — it takes two seconds and it changes the repair-vs.-replace math significantly.

Can I replace gutters in sections over time?

Yes — we do partial replacements, usually by elevation (the whole rear, for example). It spreads the cost, though doing it all at once is cheaper per foot. We will quote both ways if you ask.

Is it worth repairing 30-year-old gutters?

Rarely, if they are steel — the material is done. Sometimes, if they are aluminum and the problems are truly local. We will give you the honest read with photos during the free visit.
