Owings Mills is the new end of Baltimore County's northwest corridor — subdivisions from the 1980s through today, with some of the biggest roof spans in the county. And that is exactly the issue: many of these homes were built with standard 5-inch gutters on roofs that really want 6-inch. When the original gutters were hung, the builder was watching the budget, not the cloudbursts. Twenty years later, the homeowner is watching water shoot over the gutter in every summer storm.
The tell is overflow in heavy rain when the gutters are clean. If your gutters were just cleaned and they still spill over in a downpour, the problem is capacity, not clogs. A big two-story colonial can shed an astonishing amount of water off a single roof plane, and one 5-inch run with a single downspout simply cannot carry it. We measure the roof area feeding each run and do the sizing honestly — sometimes the answer is 6-inch seamless gutters, sometimes it is just adding a downspout where the water wants to go.
Tree cover in the newer sections is still growing in, which means many Owings Mills homes do not need guards yet — a maintenance plan with twice-yearly cleanings is the right-sized answer. In the older sections near Reisterstown Road, the maturing trees are starting to fill gutters, and guards are becoming the smarter play. We will tell you which stage your street is at.
